If you’re sleeping enough, you are spending one-third of your day (and your life!) snuggled up on your mattress. Moreover, research increasingly points to sufficient sleep and sleep quality as key factors in determining a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. If your mattress has become bumpy, uneven, hollow, or less than comfortable, it is time to look for the best mattress material and get a new mattress.

Type of mattress versus the size of the mattress

Just like most other comforts and luxuries, you have a wide range of mattresses available to you in India today. Mattresses are available in several different types, and also in different sizes. In order for you to bring home a mattress that is well-suited to your needs, you should understand the distinction between the two categories of differentiation.

For example, memory foam is a type of mattress, whereas when you say double bed mattress, you are referring to mattress dimensions. The type of mattress correlates to your sleeping position, and the size of the mattress is determined by who (or how many) are going to sleep on it.

By the end of this article, you will be able to select a mattress based on the type that is most suitable for your sleeping position.

Mattress types

Here are the 7 types of mattresses you’re likely to encounter during your mattress shopping expedition.

Spring mattress

As the name suggests, these mattresses come with wire coils — or springs — that provide support to the user. The higher the volume of the coils in the mattress, the better the support. These mattresses are usually available at a variety of price points, depending on the number of coils fitted into the mattress.

Memory foam mattress

This type of mattress contours itself to suit the shape of your body, responds to body temperature, and keeps dust mites, bed bugs, and mold at bay. In India, the only issue with this type of mattress is that it could make you feel warm. However, mattress brands have innovated with ‘gel infusion’ that keeps the user cool and comfortable.

Hybrid mattress

Some users want the best of both worlds, and mattress brands have responded to this with the hybrid mattress that has both — memory foam and coils. What you get is a nice bouncy bed, with minimal motion transfer and the anti-allergen qualities of the foam mattress that are otherwise absent in spring-only mattresses.

Latex mattress

This is where things start getting a little premium. These mattresses are environment friendly, boast superlative obstruction of motion transfer, and are seen as the solution to lower back pain. They work very much like memory foam mattresses, taking your body’s shape to keep your weight off your shoulders and tailbone.

Air mattress

Technology has made the air mattress possible, and the air mattress is one of the most expensive types out there. It uses air pockets to give you that sleeping-on-a-cloud feeling, while foam or latex at the surface offers you back support. These even come with a remote to adjust the feel of the bed, and both sides of the bed can have unique settings.

Futon mattress

For your guest bedroom, you might like a futon that can be used as a sofa during the day. Similarly, a lot of people who rent apartments or who live in small apartments might see benefits in having a futon. A futon mattress is foldable and doubles up as a sofa cushion when not in use as a bed. These mattresses are soft and can be comfortable; they do however have a portion that has to accommodate a fold.

Waterbed mattress

For those that dream of getting lost in the sea, waterbed mattresses would seem like an attractive option. They come with a water chamber and can either be hard-sided or soft-sided in terms of design.

Mattress sizes

7 sizes of mattresses you’re likely to find today include:

  1. Crib – Good for an infant or toddler
  2. Twin – Good for one (taller/older) child
  3. Full/Double bed mattress – Good for two children
  4. Queen size – Good for two average-size adults
  5. King size – Fits a toddler in along with two average-size adults
  6. California King – Good for taller or broader adults, because it is wider and also longer; ideal when you allow your pets to sleep at your feet
  7. Alaska King – Can accommodate up to 4 people

You should be aware that different brands will refer to their mattresses by different marketing names. For example, your memory foam Durfi mattress might be known by another name at Sleepwell or Duroflex. Knowing the actual names of the different types of mattresses can help you make an apples-to-apples comparison, in terms of price. That way, you can compare Durfi mattresses to mattresses from Kurlon, Sleepwell, and other brands before you purchase a model.
